Cranberry Coconut Skillet Granola

This post is in partnership with The Quaker Oats Company. Thanks for supporting everything that makes nutrition happen!

As you may know I’ve been a Quaker Partner for a few years now but it’s not only because I’m an oatmeal fanatic, we both advocate for the same issues that face our communities. Food insecurity is still a big problem across this country, and especially in a year like this people are facing several challenges on top of trying to provide food for their families.

Maple Sea Salt Baked Oatmeal with Grapefruit

This is a sponsored post in partnership with The Quaker Oats Company. All opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting everything that makes nutrition happen!

New year = more opportunities to try something new using Quaker oatmeal! If you’re looking for a few easy and attainable ways to help support your health this year, start with something small – like making sure you’re including oats into at least one meal a day. Consuming oats over the course of the day can help increase whole grain consumption. Since there are several ways to use it in different recipes, it’s a very convenient way to help add some additional nutrition. Whether you’re looking to make something savory or you’re trying to satisfy your sweet tooth, there’s an oatmeal recipe for that!

32 Small Candle Companies to Support (Chicago Local, Female + BIPOC Owned!)

I’ve rounded up 32 different candle brands for you to support this season as you purchase gifts for yourself or someone special. These candles are all tried by yours truly because I’m that scent-obsessed. Plus, now more than ever small businesses are looking for our support so if you think a candle would be the perfect little gift, consider ordering from one of these small businesses. They’re such a special way to make even the smallest moments a little more special.

Do you ever associate a scent to a memory? I definitely do and each scent reminds me of a different season in my life – just like how people associate songs or homemade meals with memories. I always light a candle when I end the workday to make that transition from work mode to relax mode a little more official.

A few of my candle criteria’s:

  1. The scents have to layer well and not be super intrusive – I’m a big fan of the woodsy scents but like them to not be super overpowering.
  2. Preferably no paraffin wax – all of these should be soy or coconut wax-based.
  3. Doubles as decor! Must be aesthetically pleasing (yes, I said it.).
  4. As many local + female + BIPOC-owned businesses as possible.

You might have noticed a little color palette going on here. I love having a neutral space so everything here are in shades of black, white, and grey with some gold accents here and there to match.

Some of the businesses give back to the community so by supporting them, you’re also supporting their community. Aside from the locals and the women/ BIPOC-owned picks, I did include my tried and true cult favorites like Le Labo, Byredo, and Diptyque  at the end because they are classics for a reason. If you could find these at your local boutiques or small shops – even better! I know Alice & Wonder here in Chicago carries the Canceled Plans candles. Happy shopping and cheers to your space smelling amazing everyday! *Note – I get no kickback or commission from any links in this post. Just wanted to share these with you all!

Navigating Food Comparisons on the Internet…A Few Reminders.

It’s been the year of changes for us all and I’m sure all of us have been impacted one way or another by the year that is 2020. Those changes might have included something related to our eating routines, habits or food choices – and maybe that caught you off guard a little and you’re still trying to navigate those changes. Trust me when I say, you’re not the only one – throughout my entire year of working with clients, everyone has expressed this concern. Some days I have to deal with those changes myself too, as an RD – we’re still in a pandemic after all.

And with the holidays coming up, all of us are bound to see some changes in the next few weeks too, so consider this your pep-talk to get your mindset right. Not only right now in this moment but moving forward every day! I’ve had this chat with clients on navigating food comparisons on social media / the internet before so I thought I would be extra generous and give you some insights on some of the reminders I give them.

how representation goes in hand with empathy.

This obviously looks different from my regular nutrition + recipe posts, but the magnitude of everything that has happened in the year and these past few weeks pushed me to gather up all my thoughts in a way that reminded me of why I initially wanted to start blogging almost 8 years ago – to share a perspective from my own lived experiences that might be different from you, in hopes that it serves you in some way. You can take or leave what you need from this. I don’t believe we all need to agree on the same things. Perspective is a beautiful thing and so is having the respect to acknowledge somebody different from you. The election brought something up that I felt like I needed to share – the topic of representation in the media.

And okay let’s be real – the memes have been great these past few weeks and honestly just one of the things that have kept my mental space afloat during this year and election season, but I didn’t feel like sharing one just to share one and to hope that it gets my point across. I also don’t feel the pressure to do something on social media just because everyone else is doing it – just not my style. However, I know that with any kind of platform on social media comes with its territory and responsibility, especially as someone who is considered a minority in the field with some power to influence. So, I fall back to my trusted way of having an outlet to express – writing. Real words and not just a thread on carbs or cauliflower rice. While that’s also super fun for me, it has its time and place. I thought I originally wanted to be a journalist when I was younger (though I’m not a perfect writer) before I thought I wanted to a dentist before I finally thought that nutrition was my thing – change is constant so who knows what’s even next? 🤪

I don’t think I can move forward talking only about nutrition or recipes (a privilege I acknowledge in itself) without talking about how + why, especially now more than ever, representation matters – in my world of health + wellness, my own experiences as an Asian-American woman in nutrition, and everything I do in my career to advocate for health. The wellness industry we’ve built here – while with some good intentions, is an industry that works to often make things feel exclusive instead of inclusive. One rotation in a food desert as a dietetic intern (ask any dietitian) will start as a catalyst to open a pair of eyes to experiences that might have looked very different from their own. Accessibility to healthier food options is a true barrier to health among many other factors and I never want to make anyone feel like just because they don’t have the latest (insert new product here!), they are unable to attain personal health.
