Nutrition for Balancing Stress and Inflammation

This post is written in partnership with New Chapter vitamins. Thanks for supporting partnerships that allow me to speak about topics I love and make Nutrition Happen!

If there’s one thing we all occasionally struggle with, it’s probably stress. Stress is a normal response from our bodies, regardless of whether it’s physical or psychological. In fact, if you exercise in any way or enjoy workouts that involve high intensity interval training, stress on the body is inevitable. As a result of the physical stress, inflammation kicks in to help rebuild tissues that help the body get stronger. I know inflammation often has a negative connotation but it’s technically a natural (and healthy) response by the body to protect us. Inflammation is not necessarily negative because it’s usually temporary and clears up quickly once the stress subsides. However, stress that builds up over time can contribute to the type of inflammation that leads to injury or pain.

How Chicago Locals Make Nutrition Happen: Carolyn Snider, Welltended

Nutrition Happens. We’re not solely focused on the food around here (even though we LOVE chatting about a good meal!) – we believe nutrition happens when we’re intentional about the way we’re feeding every aspect of life: the decisions we make for our bodies, the way we take care of our minds, and the relationships we choose to invest in.

While healthy certainly looks differently on everyone, one thing we can all agree on is this: health should be a judgement-free zone. Instead of focusing on perfection, we’re actively choosing to drop the comparison game and instead, celebrate people just the way they are. Because nutrition happens with no labels – whether you’re holding a green smoothie or a maple glazed doughnut. This series intends to share the incredible minds of Chicagoans in this community who share a similar passion for living their own definition of their best lives. Here’s how these Chicago locals are all making nutrition happen:

*May’s note: Carolyn’s business, Welltended curates indoor potted plants that DELIVERS right to the front of your doorstep (I KNOW!). I love supporting locals because small businesses reminds me of the work ethic and passion that goes into running your own brand (my parents are small business owners!) And everything about Welltended speaks to me on another level: as someone who’s always browsing for her next house plant but a) lives in the city b) does not own a car c) does not want walk a fiddle fig leaf tree 2-3 miles back to her apartment d) also does not want to call an Uber/Lyft to take said fiddle fig leaf tree home and break all the branches in the process e) couldn’t for the life of her keep up with plant maintenance in the past Welltended comes in to solve all of my plant mom status problems in one day.  Worried about being a bad plant parent? Welltended offers on – demand support for ALL of your plant problems. Just send them a photo of what’s going on (text, calls, emails…they take them all!) and they’ll get back to with solutions. They’ll even send reminders to water your plants! As mentioned, the plants are delivered in the Chicago area right to your doorstep. There’s also options for it to come already planted in the planter (so you don’t need to buy a separate 10lb bag of soil for one plant…again, #plantprobs). The selection and quality is by far one of the best I’ve seen in the city so far. Carolyn’s background is in plants so she’s truly a plant lady – find her at @welltended on Instagram and go support your local boss lady. I’m convinced there’s nothing she can’t do! Find a list of available plants here – snag them fast, they’re in high demand!

5 Non-Toxic Face Masks (that are worth it)

Are you guys using any worthy “non-toxic” skincare products? The regulations in the beauty / skincare industry are pretty loose and that’s why we’re hearing all the buzz in the recent years about products that are made with better ingredients and standards. While I’m the first to admit I’m a skincare and product JUNKIE (my bank account is not proud), it’s taken me a while to warm up to the “natural” beauty world because to be honest, I’d rather have a product that WORKS. I’ve come to the conclusion that beauty and skincare for me works in the same way as nutrition: a balanced approach. Meaning, I’ll do my best to find non-toxic makeup that I like and use them while still keeping my old favorites (I’m looking at you, Tom Ford. Their bronzer is everything I’ve ever wanted in a bronzer). In the middle of researching and trying new products, I’ve came across a few face masks with great ingredients (that WORK!!) and I wanted to share with you guys:

How Chicago Locals Make Nutrition Happen: Jacquelyn Brennan, Pilates + Coffee

Here’s how these Chicago locals are all making nutrition happen:

*May’s note: Beginning of this year I made it a goal of mine to supplement my other workouts with Pilates to work more on posture + alignment.  (Fun fact: I maxed out all my elective courses aka the fun classes in college on every pilates course they offered…priorities, right?) Enter Pilates + Coffee (my actual dream combination!) Moving to Chicago has allowed me to meet some amazing people in the fitness community and Jacquelyn is of no exception – her knowledge on body alignment / movement is reflective in her attentive teaching. Her studio, Pilates + Coffee is located in the Roscoe Village neighborhood here in Chicago. The space gets the most insane morning light and the coffee in the cafe part is from Ipsento, which is also a Chicago native spot (the 606 location on North Milwaukee is one of my favorite coffee shops!). You’ll also find Health-Ade kombucha on tap and chai tea + turmeric lattes made with Dona Chai. When I think of truly unique Chicago local spots, I think of Jacquelyn and her family at Pilates + Coffee – they’ve built this space out of their passion for supporting the community!  Check out the schedule here to book out a class (small group classes fill up fast since there’s only 6 spots per class, so my advice would be to plan ahead – private + semi-private classes are also an option!)

What’s for Dinner: April 2018 Edition

As much as I love throwing together a new recipe, it’s easy to get into a routine or stuck in a rut for those weeks when life gets BUSY. And for those times where life happens and you just need some default inspiration (that you know will be good), the world of food blogs can be a beautiful thing.

I’ve gathered up a few (EASY!) recipes from some of my personal favorite food blogs to make for the month of April:

How Chicago Locals Make Nutrition Happen: Sayre Masters, Lead Cycle Instructor – Studio Three Chicago

Here’s how these Chicago locals are all making nutrition happen:

*Mays note: I started taking Sayre’s Peloton cycling classes shortly after I joined as a member at Studio Three almost 2 years ago now – and I think I’ve been in over a hundred of her classes since! Trust me when I say after your first Sayre class, you would be attending religiously too – the energy is insane. If you find yourself in town for class, make sure you check out the schedule and book a class here. You can’t find a studio as local as Studio Three in Chicago and trust me, you don’t want to miss Sayre’s famous playlists (nor will you regret when she tells you to turn the resistance up one [or five] more points….TRUST!)
