5 Trader Joe’s Items, 5 Ingredients or Less

Admit it: we all love a good list with anything Trader Joe’s, right? It’s a favorite grocery store for many people because the prices are reasonable, the food is fun and straightforward, and the employees are honestly the nicest around. I love how they make somewhat “trendy” food a bit more accessible for everyone looking to try new things. There are so many great quality items you can find here  for a much better price comparatively to other health stores.

I’m sharing a few items that I’ve loved since my first day in a Trader Joe’s (circa maybe like 2012? If you’ve been following Nutrition Happens since it started in May of 2013…..then you know!!) – all items with a simple + minimal ingredient list:

Food Essentials for Healthy Skin

This post is written in partnership with New Chapter,Vermont-based maker of vitamins and supplements. Thanks for supporting collaborations that make Nutrition Happen!

Happy Spring! It’s finally time to leave behind the bulky sweaters and get some more sunlight into our day. With the arrival of the warmer season, I always like to chat and remind clients of the importance between nutrition and skin health. The skin is technically our body’s largest organ and rebuilds itself constantly with the vitamins and nutrients from the foods we eat. There’s no denying the relationship between what we eat and how it affects our overall body. The winter season has the tendency to affect our skin’s moisture levels due to dry air and harsh winds. Spring is the perfect time to fill up on the foods that supports healthy skin! I personally struggle with dry skin in the colder months so this past winter I incorporated New Chapter’s Perfect Hair Skin, & Nails into my routine to help support new skin and nail growth.

How Chicago Locals Make Nutrition Happen: Jessica Foust, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Farmer’s Fridge

Nutrition happens. We’re not solely focused on the food around here (even though we LOVE chatting about a good meal!) – we believe nutrition happens when we’re intentional about the way we’re feeding every aspect of life: the decisions we make for our bodies, the way we take care of our minds, and the relationships we choose to invest in.

While healthy certainly looks differently on everyone, one thing we can all agree on is this: health should be a judgement-free zone. Instead of focusing on perfection, we’re actively choosing to drop the comparison game and instead, celebrate people just the way they are. Because nutrition happens with no labels – whether you’re holding a green smoothie or a maple glazed doughnut. This series intends to share the incredible minds of Chicagoans in this community who share a similar passion for living their own definition of their best lives. Here’s how these Chicago locals are all making nutrition happen:

*May’s note: I met Chef Jess at a Farmer’s Fridge lunch this past winter and and immediately knew I wanted her to be a part of this series. Dietitians often wear many hats and Jess is a prime example of someone in the industry with an unconventional (and amazing!) path in nutrition. Also, I’m big fan of Farmer’s Fridge – I wrote about them in a post here. They’re a company that sells salads in automated fridges through the Chicago area. The salads and meals are packed into reusable jars daily with fresh ingredients – I love that they are a company with high standards for changing the way people eat on the go. I’m telling you now that you should keep this humble company on your radar – I have a feeling these fridges will completely change the way we see “fast food” in the next few years! Check it out if you’re in Chicago – you can find the locations here. (ps don’t leave the fridge without also grabbing a few of the chocolate trail mixes – TRUST!)

Top 5 Most Purchased Amazon Prime Pantry Food Items

*Disclosure: This post is not sponsored but contains affiliate links, meaning  at no additional cost to you I will earn commission if you click through and make a purchase. Thanks for supporting projects that make Nutrition Happen!

You guys. I’ve been an Amazon Prime member since 2011. They got me my first semester of college. I signed up because duh, you got a whole year for free (well, at least when I was a student!)  and at that age, anything felt possible when things were free. It’s honestly the actual best marketing scheme because they got me for LIFE. Because here I am, 7 years later, no longer a student but still an avid Amazon Primer.

No shame in the Amazon game though. It’s to the point where I have the Amazon Prime Visa card and since the Amazon + Whole Foods merge, the cashback perks have been complete game changers. Yes, I do think you deserve to get cashback for all those times you spent your hard earned cash at the hot bar.

However, one of my favorite services from the merge is the ability to order Whole Food pantry items through Amazon Pantry. Living in Chicago, I love grocery delivery services because a) I always overbuy at the store – having an online cart in front of me helps with impulse purchases b) in the case I do overbuy online anyway, I don’t have to haul everything home or call an Uber to drive me 4 blocks back home (been there too many times). The prices are exactly as you would find them at Whole Foods and it gets delivered right to my doorstep.

Three Mindful Health Tips For This Year

This post was written in partnership with New Chapter Vitamins. All opinions reflected are my own. Thank you for supporting projects that make Nutrition Happen!

It’s not a new year without getting slammed with nutrition messages that push all liquid “cleanses” or “detoxes” without substantial, nutritious food. News flash: your body can detox with real food that’s good for you. It’s been proven again and again that diets that are too extreme or unsustainable over the long-term does NOT work.

Healthy eating should make you feel good in a way that fits into your current lifestyle in a natural and maintainable way. But between all of the different “healthy” eating plans buzzing around the media today, I know how confusing it is to pick the best one for your personal lifestyle. Dietary preferences will always look different on everyone because there are no two genetics, habits, and health priorities that are the same. However, the one underlying similarity between all of them is this: making wholesome, delicious, and real food choices a priority (or, at least 80% of the time!).

5 Black Workout Leggings on Repeat

(all photos are courtesy of Lululemon)

Happy 2018!

Hope you guys had the best first week so far. Things have been a bit more quiet around here because a) I took a mini digital detox over the holidays, and it was the BEST  b) my plan for the Nutrition Happens space has always been to include more lifestyle content (as seen often on IG stories) – and I’m really happy to say all of that is currently on que and in progress! This year my goal is to collect all these personal wellness tidbits and share them with you – including lots of Chicago-related things (more to come soon, promise!)

Today I’m sharing 5 pairs of (black) leggings and joggers I wear on repeat. No, this isn’t a sponsored post. I genuinely wear all of these on repeat and continue to repurchase them over each season. I get asked often whether or not I think that workout gear is worth spending $$$ on and for me, it’s a personal yes. I know that answer is subjective and different for everyone, but my reasoning is that I love to workout to feel good and legit wear this stuff EVERY day. I’ve always been picky about clothes and have tried almost every other top workout brand on the market (think all the curated brands from Bandier, Carbon 38, Girlfriend Collective, Outdoor Voices….yes, I’ve tried them all!) But my one tried and true is still Lululemon – mainly because it fits well on me and I know the styles front and back. This is a typical answer but honestly the truth – I can buy everything in black (because it’s functional!!) and I know what to expect from the quality. White and gray leggings are cute and all, but sweat stains are SO real and I won’t deal with that BS during workouts.
